Lego Mindstorms Robotics – Final Report

Hands-on Excitement

The goal of the Lego MindStorm Robotics is to inspire students to take an interest in electronics, programing, and robotics in a hands-on way. From the beginning, the students have been in control of their robots. They built them and take care of them daily. The software has also shown to be easy enough for the students to get the gist of, but difficult enough to make them struggle from time to time. When dealing with motors, sensors, and the brick itself, the software allows them to see robot in action quickly and understand how the changes effect its movements. They have to fail multiple times before they can succeed.

Create Value

Students watch their robot work its way through the obstacle course.

Probably one of the best things that has come out of the Mindstorms is that students get to instantly see what they have created. They have begun to understand how to tell the robots what to do and when they mess up, they understand why. The beginning projects have consisted of getting their robots to draw a shape like a heart, clover, or spade. At first, students would accept a lopsided awkward looking shape just to be able to move on, but now, students take more time to make the shapes come out perfect. They are pushing each other to write better programs and be better than the other groups. They are also understanding that sometimes it takes failure before they can reach for success. Seeing students get excited, jump around, and high-five each other is proof that there is great value within these robots.

Even though we have only been working with the robots for a couple of weeks, they have definitely been a great contribution for the class. Not only are the students understanding programing and electronics better, they are teaching themselves. They are able to work at their own pace and add their own creativity too all of their assignments. The group dynamics are constantly changing as well. One student might be the leader for one assignment, but then another might step up and lead the next.
